Sam has a broad civil and commercial litigation practice, with particular experience in:

  • complex commercial, property and construction disputes;
  • contentious trust and estate claims; and
  • employment and insolvency matters.

Alongside his civil practice, Sam assists senior counsel in serious criminal and regulatory investigations and prosecutions. He is a supervised provider of criminal legal aid.

Clients often comment on Sam’s ability to provide clarity and reassurance during difficult and stressful times.

Sam appears regularly in the District and High Courts and has experience in appellate litigation. He is frequently instructed to support King’s Counsel in complex and strategically significant matters. He also represents clients in alternative dispute resolution forums, including negotiation, mediation, and arbitration.

His recent work reflects the breadth of his practice. Examples include:

  • Seeking urgent interim relief in a judicial review matter
  • Advising defendants facing serious criminal charges
  • Negotiating the resolution of a failed joint business venture
  • Representing parties in trust and estate claims

Before joining the independent bar, Sam practised as an Associate at a specialist litigation firm in Christchurch. He holds a First-Class Honours degree in Law from the University of Otago and is a former winner of the National Young Lawyers’ Mooting Competition.

He is a member of the New Zealand Law Society, the New Zealand Bar Association, and the Law Association of New Zealand.

Sam welcomes enquiries from solicitors and clients throughout New Zealand and is available to discuss potential instructions.
